User Fields when submitting article
Please forgive me, I'm old LOL
While posting an article there are user fields. What and how are these used in the article?
Thanks in advance

Re: User Fields when submitting article
First off, you don't have to use them. But if you have a set of articles with a common theme, that you might place in a single Section, that require or could use a common set of keywords and information tables, then you can use these fields.
Let's go with a real estate example. If you had a Section showing listings of properties for sale, then every listing needs to display a few important characteristics in a uniform place where they are easy to find. E.g. The price! Number of bedrooms, etc. That's what you might use it for.
On this site click on one of the Headlines showing an image of a white Toyota Supra. One is a sales ad, where I've used user fields for basic car info, make, model, price, etc. The other is a demo of the new Gallery feature, which lets you display a Coppermine Gallery in a crisp modern style (more flickr than than the default Coppermine 35mm film icon ;-)) but also lets you add in an intro image - maybe the album title, a closing image - maybe the photograph's own picture, a textual introduction to the gallery, and a block of user fields, in this case for standardise info about the gallery, Album name, Photographer's name, etc.
One of my (star) beta testers has a site with How-To projects on it, and uses the user fields for an Items-You'll-Need list.
Hope this gives you an idea of a few uses. Basically is a small, simple, 'poor man's data field capability - for up to 10 shortish fields. Useful when you need it, but can be safely ignore if you don't. In fact many of the sample templates do not use User Fields at all.

Re: User Fields when submitting article
Thank you very much for the fast reply.
Totally understand it now.
Could be used as ex: a common feature listing of said product or like a common feature list of reaccuring stories .
Very cool stuff, think I like this quite a bit.
Now off to find how to edit the field names
EDIT::..Language/pro_news.php did the trick

Re: User Fields when submitting article
Hi Wide,
EDIT::..Language/pro_news.php did the trick
This is not really the place to change the names to the users fields, although it can be done.
The way it is meant to be done is in the Pro News Administration area under Sections
When you add a new section, you assign things like the article template, forum, privileges, the Field Title and User fields names in there.
Then when you add categories you can assign a different section to different categories if you wish.
For simplicity, what I do is give a section the same name as the category that I am going to assigned it to.
But remember you should create the section first then go in and create the category .
This might help a bit as well

Re: User Fields when submitting article
language/pro_news.php will do it, and used to be the only way. It is still the best way if your site is multilingual, as it lets you enter the text in each of the supported languages.
But for a single language site, you can now edit the user fields in the Admin > Sections entry. This approach also gives you the advantage of being able to have different field names for each Section! And avoids having to use an editor
You can of course combine these 2 methods, set up default user fields in language/pro_news.php, and then override them as necessary in specific Sections.

Thank you both very much!
Having a real blast poking around in the module.
Kind of set me back a bit in a good way as "more tools" to work with now.
Thanks again

Yeah, check the times - we both typed replies at the same time!

Yep, I like my modules to adapted to the way I want to present the data, not the other way around! The downside is the risk of confusion, but I find that easier to deal with!
